Hughes looks like he may be at the end of the line. He wasn’t able to do much with Alves, who was in command for most of the fight. Alves stuffed a few takedowns early, and landed a strong knee as well as some ground and pound in the first. In the second, Alves cut Hughes with a kick to the face and then ended the bout with a hard knee to the face. Hughes was slow getting up after a scramble and Alves raced in and blasted him with a knee.
What knee to the face? Hughes took a good shot from the knee of Alves but it was all shoulder/body contact. Hughes lack of defense after that shot was obviously from falling on his own knee.
Matt Hughes has clearly gotten old… He was tired by the end of the 1st round… He was beaten bad by Thiago Alves at the end, all bloodied and beaten…

Hughes is too old for this now, i think he doesnt have the spark he used to have. If Thiago fought Hghes when he was in his prime Thiago would have gotten fucked up. I wanna see Thiago face GSP, someone who is in their prime and is amazing. Thiago wont last a round with GSP if it took him 2 rounds with Hughes. Thats all there is to it.
It took GSP 2 rounds to beat Matt Hughes for their last 2 fights. So what kind of fighter does that make GSP? What does age have to do with anything? Chuck, Wanderlei, and Couture are all older than Hughes. Matt has just always been a one dimensional fighter lets face it. Can you name the last person he has honestly knocked out? Aside from the Carlos Newton fight cause they were both out. All he ever does is wrestle them to the floor, ground and pound them into them giving up there back, head, or arm for a submission. Who are the fighters that he fought during his run at defending his belt? BJ Penn (got his ass kicked until Penn ran out of gas), Royce Gracie (ancient skinny 1 dimensional fighter), Joe Riggs (sucks), Frank Trigg (lets no go there), GSP (young and inexperierenced at the time but Hughes was still getting his ass kicked until GSP made a mistake), and Renato Verissimo (good but not UFC good). Hughes started sucking the minute he started facing 3 dimensionsal fighters. Serves him right for leaving the Miletech Fighting Systems to start his own gym. FYI since he left Miletech, he has lost 3 of his last 4 fights. Haha
Matt Hughes was a great champion and always will be known for that. I just think GSP really killed hughes confidence matt hughes is still good but there are too many young great fighters. Matt looks like he likes to fight a slow paced fight and as long these fighters can stop his take downs and fight a high paced fight alot of fighters in the ufc stacked welterwight divison can beat him..but not taking anything away from matt at all… he had his prime> and i think thaigo and fitch should have to fight to see who gets GSP!!!
Matt Hughes has destroyed a lot of people in his past. Even though he may be a one dimensional fighter he was and still will be one of the best that has ever entered the octagon!! The game has advanced drastically since the beginning and it is unfortunate that Matt couldn’t adapt as well as some of the newer upcoming fighters. Matt has 1 more fight in him and I see him winning it!! Serra doesn’t stand a chance!! The only reason Serra won his fight against GSP is because he landed a lucky shot. Oh yea, and one last thing… to the moron who talked shit about Hughes leaving Militech (btw, you spelled it wrong also) to start his own gym… He may have left but he and his other fighters still train with the Militech fighters. There was no bad blood when he left, he just wanted his own gym since it was something he has always wanted. Next time do some research before you open your mouth you jackass!!
