Werdum managed a takedown with a minute left and got into full mount, allowing him to pound away. Vera didn’t seem to be in great trouble, but referee Dan Miragliotta, who was the official in the Kimbo Slice-James Thompson fight last week, jumped in and stopped it. Vera had hurt Werdum earlier with a left and followed with a solid forearm. But Werdum managed to get Vera onto his back and then got mount. From there, he was raining fists on Vera, who seemed to be blocking the majority of them with his arms crossed in front of his face. Vera protested loudly, but Miragliotta had seen enough.

this referee is bullshit. thats two fights in two weeks that he has made terrible calls. he needs to be retired!!
I agree, that was absolutely the worst stoppage I have seen in…well since the Kimbo fight haha.

its funny this guy wont stop the fight when kimbo is on the ground getting hit alot more than that but he will stop this fight with like 20 seconds left.. needs to get fuckin fired

The lesson here is early stoppages happen all the time. Don not get in a spot where the ref has the option to stop. Full mount is one of these positions. Excellent work from Werdum passing guard into mount. Vera is a stud and his decent Jujitsu everyone is booing but Werdum did pass and pound. Give him some credit lol
The ref should have his name legally changed to “Meriggedyofighta”.

OK, I just watched it again and the fight was stopped early….BUT if the ref did not stop it Vera would not have been able to improve his position and would have just eaten another 20 seconds of knuckle sandwiches from the FULL MOUNT and would have been KTFO before the 20 seconds was over. Plus he looked horrible in the fetal position taking those shots and not even answering back at all…
its a tko if the guy getting beat ISNT intelligently defending himself but brandon was with his crossed arm guard. the majority of those punches werent getting through and werdum was doing minimal damage so there really is no need to stop a fight just because someone is landing a lot of insignicant blows on a alert and defending opponent
that is a terrible call, what the fuck was that!!!! out of ten punches he through on the mount maybe 1 or 2 landed, it almost makes me feel like the fight was sold. that some bullshit!!!!!!
that was bullshit..early stoppage. cant the ref see that vera is using crossarm block does he know that the punch will not easily pass thru will that defense

Okay, early stoppage for sure. We can’t know for sure, but I’d assume that Vera wouldn’t have gotten out of the full mount from a BJJ blackbelt like Werdum. Question is, was this enough to give Werdum get a shot @ Big Nog after Mir?
