Analysis
Kimbo came out victorious but sure showed he has a long way to go before he can be considered a real heavyweight threat. Kimbo struggled through much of the first round, getting put onto the mat several times, but demonstrated some skill in getting back to his feet. Kimbo wobbled Thompson with a couple uppercuts in the second, but later found himself on the wrong end of a series of elbows on the ground. In the third, Kimbo connected on a home run of a punch that cut Thompson open. Kimbo made his first punch of the third round count, a wild haymaker that opened a horrible cut on Thompson’s left ear. He then followed up with a punishing exchange. The crowd was not happy the fight was stopped, but Thompson was wobbling and was clearly a punch or two away from being put out.

Fight should have been stopped when Thompson was raining down elbows, while Kimbo did nothing to defend. Instead of stopping the fight, the referee stands them up, favoring Kimbo. What a fixed!

What about Kimbo tapping when Thompson had him in a standing guilletene in the first round. Definitely a fixed fight. Kimbo would get destroyed against any heavyweight with a well rounded mma game.

With 2:49 seconds left in the first round, Kimbo is seen as CLEARLY tapping on Thompson’s right elbow in reaction to the choke hold that he was caught in. He continued to fight after the referee failed to stop the fight but this fight should be challenged. Kimbo was done.
What’s more, Thompson hadn’t stopped fighting at all when the referee DID stop the fight. He was still exchanging, and while he looked wobbly, he wasn’t out on his feet. In fact, he looked pissed from the very moment that the ref got in between them like that. Thompson was in trouble similarly to that in the second round and still managed to shoot on Kimbo and reverse the situation.
I’m seriously disapointed in EliteXC.
As for the people dogging on Kimbo, I would love to see anyone climb in the ring with HIM. He’s obviously got alot of work to do before he’ll ever be considered among the top heavyweights in the world, but KIMBO would be the first one to admit that, which in fact he did in the ring after the fight. Cut the guy some slack, he’s an exciting fighter and he’s going to provide the community with alot of intersting fights, especially as he learns more and gets settled into the MMA game.
If you want to direct your frustrations about the fight, direct them at EliteXC and the referee who bungled his job so badly.

Don’t get me wrong, I think slice is a descent guy, I really respect his attitude and sportsmanship. However, the fact of the matter is, he is overrated and undertrained. His cardio is way under par, and his grappling and groundgame are piss poor. I strongly believe that the fight most definately should have been stopped in the second round when thompson delivered some 20 or more unanswered blows to the face and head of slice. It would have been a far more legitament stoppage than the horrible judgement call from the ref in the third. But hey, that wasn’t the first shitty call he made that night. Bottom line, if slice struggled so much with nothing more than a second rate fighter such as thompson, imagine the onslaught that slice has coming to him when he takes on some talented, heavyweight mixed martial artists. Kimbo waited way to late to start his career, he will never be on the same page as the greats.

I watched the fight and Kimbo wasn’t as bad as many people are trying to picture him. I watched as many clips as possible and I don’t for the love of christ see him taping out. People around the cage did not have a better viewing angle and view clarity than the camera.
Btw and what’s this pussy mentality of stopping the fight because of some sloppy elbows and punches that didn’t even make a single scratch on Kimbo’s face?? Not even a drop of blood damnit! Kimbo was just tired and confused but not really hurt. There’s is a strong possibility that if the ref didn’t stop the fight kimbo would KO him in a few seconds and even his goddamn ugly disgusting ear was bleeding all over the place. Kimbo won fair and square.
And yes… Kimbo shown himself as a quite sloppy fighter who at his current level does not stand much chance against top fighters .. but still he won this fight.. so give credit where it’s due..
I seen the clips of the fight and Kimbo clearly had his thumbs up! Where is this supposed TAPOUT? I will agree that Kimbo is underdeveloped for a structured form of fighting. With that being said and done, the heart that they both displayed is honest to the sport. There’s a majority of people that can get behind a keyboard and theoreticaly whoop everyones’ ass and can’t hold a candle to neither’s skills. Both gentlemen put on a wonderful display. No one appeared to be sand bagging or showing off. These two gentlemen went inside of a ring to give their all and that’s something that I have yet to witness ANYONE on this blog give respect to! Much RESPECT to Mr. Ferguson, and Mr. Thompson, I enjoyed the fight!!
It was a good fight..Both fighters aren’t that great; Thompson with his average record and Kimbo only known for his backyard fights. As for the match I would say their skill levels are the same, and it did look like Kimbo tapped in the first but he kept on fighting so he clearly wanted to go on, and as for Thompson that guy can take some hella punches and the fight should not have been stopped. The judges, fighters and ref should have been pulled together for a quick second and let the fighters decide if they wanted to continue. In my opinion I think the ref was either paid off or just a piss poor ref because you could see the look in Thompson’s face he was pissed it was stopped and the look in Kimbo’s was thank God its over. I say call it a draw and have a rematch.
On further review, I want to retract my statement about the tapout. It does apepar that he was giving a thumbs up, instead of tapping out, the commentators coroborate that view in the commentary, although it was hard to hear from reviewing the clip of the fight online.
However, I still stand by my statement that the fight should not have been stopped as early as it was. I don’t think the judge should have stopped the fight when he did, nor when Kimbo was on the ground and getting pounded on. Neither fighter was willing to give up, and they were both still willing to continue. I understand that the safety of the fighters is paramount but, if a man is still defending himself and is willing to continue, it’s not right to stop a fight.
WATCH THE FIGHT AGAIN, AND LISTEN CLOSELY… YOU CAN HEAR THE ANNOUNCER SAYING SOMETHING ALONG THE LINES OF, “HE GAVE A THUMBS UPS” WHILE IN THE HEADLOCK… HE DID NOT TAP, AND YOU’RE ALL MORONS.

When I said that the fight should have been stopped in the 2nd round due to strikes from thompson, I never said that it would have been a “good” call, I merely said that it would have been a more legitament call than the stoppage in the third when thompson was still standing for fuck’s sake! This was a cool fight, I agree that it was premature stoppage though. Looked like Kimbo was dominating with the striking, and while Thompson got Kimbo on the ground he did little to no damage.
Even if it wasn’t stopped there I’d still bet that Kimbo would have knocked him out or won by decision.

Kimbo although a very tough man lost in the first round with his tap. The fight would have been stopped by Big John in the UFC in the second round for Kimbo’s lack to defend himself! End of story! How many fights would have a different outcome like this one did when you give Kimbo more chances than he deserved. The man is a tough SOB but he technically lost! It was a fix!

After a six figure paycheck for the fight, Kimbo is laughing all the way to the bank. Good for him!! He made himself marketable and at te same time becoming overrated. But the thing is everyone in the MMA world knows where he stands and clearly he does too. He’s only mentioned a few times he has a long way to go. Give the man some credit for even attempting to move up the ladder so quickly considering his skill level at the age of 34. Obviously his ground game is sub par BUT improving vastly with every fight, which goes to show that the guy is trainable and has the capability to learn quickly. His manager needs to be very smart as to what fights they choose for Kimbo as he gradually acquires a ground game. If they match him up against brawlers for now it will be very entertaing to watch.
Kimbo didn’t tap he gave a thumbs up…its clear even on this grainy vid. He brought his hand up and gave a thumbs up and then tried to work his hand in to loosen a sloppy choke. the first round was sloppy on both sides but thompson won it.
Kimbo was killing this guy in the stand up…the elbows at the end of the 2nd would usually end a fight but it was 30 sec left and Kimbo was trying to intelligently defend himself by putting a hand up to protect himself. Could it have ended the fight yes but thompson wasnt doing any real damage and the ref didn’t so whatever.
Kimbo came out tired swung for the fence and rocked thompson again just like in the 2nd…only difference was the ref didn’t give thompson the opportunity to comeback like in the 2nd round. The whole ear controvesy is dumb, yeah it should have been drained but whatever. The ear was busted and he was allowed to keep fighting…he got rocked and was staggering, it was a bad stoppage but not because of a bloody ear.
Wasn’t a great fight but it wasn’t as bad a sham as you all are making it out to be. It is a rookie fighter on his way up fighting a guy on his way down. It for damn sure shouldn’t be a Main event cause Kimbo in terms of skill and dues doesn’t deserve it but to go at a man for accepting what has been handed to him is just wrong…it borders on being(for lack of better word) GAY!
Could it have been fixed yes…so could any fight. You all need to get over yourselves, the guy doesn’t deserve to be where he is but he is there, he won’t fight a top tier guy yet because no one fights a top tier guy right off the bat, thats the fight game. If he never does; so what? Do you really think Kimbo Slice not getting a real fight is going to kill the sport? I hardly think so seeing as how the sport made it to a major network after having been all but banned just 10-12 yrs ago. I hope to see Kimbo get to the point where he fights competitively against top guys but it won’t happen as long as EXC has him billed as their guy cause they won’t let him fight at the skill level he is at. He would be better suited for comp at the amateur levels. It is a disservice to him if Kimbo is really serious about the sport. If not his name is drawing casual eyes who want to either see a big ass nigga kick ass or people who want to see a big ass nigga get his ass kicked you more than likely on of the people watching his videos on youtube which lead to him being the top name of a MMA organization as a rookie fighter.

I am a huge fan of Kimbo. But, this was not a good victory for him. Why the hell did the ref let the fight go even while Kimbo was getting held down and elbows thrown in his face? That fight should had been stopped. But, it didn’t and I could live will that. But, the biggest problem I had with this fight was when Kimbo has Thompson wobbling on the last round ,he wasn’t knocked out and he was still fighting, the ref decides then to stop the fight. It’s ok to be held down and elbows thrown in your face while you do nothing but, it’s not ok to wobble while standing? It’s hard for me to not believe this fight was somewhat fixed. At least Kimbo knows and acknowledges he still needs a lot of work. I still have much respect for the man.
EliteXC CEO Gary Shaw has announced Kimbo’s next opponent. The fighter is promised to be Kimbo’s tough opponent yet, bringing us the old school Kimbo. From the streets of Tampa, Florida, and only 35 pounds overweight, Larry the Hotdog Vendor will fight Kimbo in an undisclosed boat dockyard.
Gary Shaw said that this fight will finally bring legitimacy to the sport of mixed martial arts.
I’m not so sure if Bimbo tapped in the first round because he was still throwing knees but he took at least 50 shots(20 straight elbows) on his back in the second round and i’m not so sure it should have continued because he was not intelligently defending himself and could clearly barley get to his feet after that. Overall, a fix seemed to be in the works or that ref is just as bad as Mazagati in the Lesnar fight. No racism here either, and find it sad that some black people would feel race is an issue. Slaves were freed long ago, get over it.

Chuck Liddell trained damn near for mma (even if he didnt know it yet) his whole life. So did Fedor. Coulture, Hughes, GSP, etc etc etc all these ppl having been doing wrestling/ martial arts since they were kids. Kimbo scrapped his way up from the streets. GET OFF HIS DICK. Dont expect him to be Fedor in 1 year. In pure hands he’s the truth, and could probably be the BOXING heavyweight champ right now. It takes time to develop a ground game, what the fuck do you want him to do!? He won, it was sloppy, but he won. He didnt tap, and Thompson was (BE REAL) never near closing the fight. Think about all the great fights with tremendous damage inflicted that battle to the finish, Thompson had the upper hand at times but was never near ending anything.
Give Kimbo some time. No he’s not the greatest. Could he be? Maybe. Will he be? I don’t know. Is he exciting? Yes. Is he a good fighter? Yes. Are his stand-up (punching only) skills off the chain? Yes. Should you all get off his dick? YES. this was not pay-per-view, the dudes just trying to make his way in the sport. Let him live.
ps. Brett Rogers is a way worse fighter, Kimbo would knock that dude out. He’s fought even bigger bums than Kimbo has, and was throwing sloppy, wild, eyes closed punches in his Elite XC fight. I wanna see Kimbo knock that guy out for sure. I used to want to see him fight Fedor (not anymore!haha)
James Thompson is good, but not exactly a world class fighter. This fight was made to further enhance Kimbos rep. But Thompson made Kimbo look very very ordinary. A bit unfair on Thompson regarding the stoppage, he may have been close to being out, but the same thing happened in round 2, before he took Kimbo down. Also in the last minute of round 2, when was Kimbo intelligently defending himself? The fight should have been stopped, but was kept going as Elite XC need Slice to keep winning to bring in the cash. It could be argued that the ref could have been showing favouritism in the interest of the company. Can you imagine Kimbo doing anything in UFC now against a decent opponent with a good ground game?! I dont think so!
Hi all,
Firstly, what an exciting fight and isn’t it great to see the depth that Kimbo has gotten to his game, even though the basic hip defense wasn’t there, I’m sure he’ll watch the video and treat it like a loss and he’ll work on that for next time. Kimbo is a humble man and a realist not an ego-tripper so mark my words he’ll be back better than ever.
Second, I think the people who say he tapped out should look more closely. I’m not sure I’ve seen him ‘tap’ anything. It was a hand wave to say ‘I’m OK!’ to the referee.
Third, it was a bad decision by the ref to end the fight. I’m sure Kimbo would have liked to get the extra blows in and really win fair and square here. It would’ve mean a lot to him.
BUT, a winners a winner. We don’t know what’s staged and what’s not, but both fighters did their very best, and were tired and bloody by the end. I think both can leave with heads held high, and I enjoyed the excitement and the tactics (even though amateur) of this fight. Kimbo will have another chance at redemption for the haters.
Congratulations to both fighters and I hope people stop bickering about this and move on.
well that just goes to show that our beloved sport has been ruined by orporate money mules like kimbo. he isnt even in the top 30 percent of heavyweights for skill, his only skill is fighting bums on youtube and having amazing pr and opponent luck. thompson, though you gotta love him, he aint all that good, and he beat kimbo. so kimbo isnt a contender.
Kimbo never tapped. Elbows that were being thrown on kimbo were barely even hitting. No cuts or swells. In the third round it was clear that one or two more hits and james was going down. Kimbo does have a lot to improve on his ground game that is obvious but you can tell by some things displayed in this fight that they are working on that

first of all this ref sucks!!! and kimbo is tuff but over rated they didnt want to see their big named fighter lose and on the first primetime tv broadcast…what i would love to see is two new comers to mma… brock lesnar vs kimbo slice so i can see brock beat kimbo down!!!!
Not racism…I’m black and I don’t think its racism. Its sensationalism. He’s whats hot and people don’t think he deserves it and he probably doesn’t but to judge him by the standard people are trying to judge him by is dumb. He’s only had 4 fights and they were against bums. Unless Bas brings in a real camp and he can get some real experience he’s not going to improve. The guy is a hell of an athlete but no where near a complete fighter and for people to expect it is stupid. It wasn’t that bad a fight…overall I’ve seen worse events…and without a doubt I’ve seen better. Hopefully Kimbo will get put in with some real comp and get some real experience and will go on to be more than a novelty act, but if not…oh well the sport will go on.
As a black person I urge people to stop saying “Slavery ended a long time ago”…Its insulting and make s you sound like an idiot. Slavery did end in 1865 but was continued in one form or another until the Voting Rights Act of 1965 ended the legal disenfranchisement of “minorities”. Considering that blacks had been legal slaves before there was an America all the way up to 1865 and then subjected to Jim Crow and constant victims of legal Domestic Terrorism and only granted full constitutional protections in 1965…43 years ain’t that long.
So many more deserving and skilled fighters are losing an opportunity because Kimbo and Josh “the punk” Thompson are stealing their spots.
People ,kimbo got in mind that he can finish tom in the frist minutes and he go like low profile from what i saw.He let tom to make some stuf /grapling/down fight be he got in mind to finish him with punch’s.The problems for kimbo arrived at the end of the first round when he was out of stamina, but after all he CONTROLED the fight and the impact of tom strikes even when he was down and saved alot of STAMINA when tom hit him with his lbows.He was like a real fighter and keep him at distance and punch him in the second round becouse he knew it wont be a “happy end” for him if tom get him down again and again.As a former kick boxer i can tell you that more important for kimbo to maintain his shape and not lose stamina was to stay down and evade the most powerfull hits but not all ,in fact what he was doin at the end of the first round.Kimbo showed us his skills in jujitsu by drop tom 2 or 3 times when he was on top and that pleased me alot.I say only 2 things for kimbo ( train at high altitude and dont look down at your oponents)
How do you guys think a man giving the thumbs up and saying I am ok is a tap out? You guys are wanting Kimbo to just fall apart in the ring and he is showing people what he can do. He does need some more practice but that guy could have been hurt bad.
The referee, like a good referee, had to ask Kimbo if he was ok and that he wasn’t passing out instead of not tapping out, so Kimbo replied with a thumbs up and if you look closely he never even touched James’s arm. If he did tap, James would have obviously reacted, getting mad at the referee like he did at the end of the match, since he wouldn’t wanna lose the match. The hold clearly did nothing to Kimbo. Later on in the second round the ref only let them continue on the ground because Kimbo clearly wasn’t getting hurt, merely confused on what to do as he was still protecting himself, and for the fact that James was still throwing punches, meaning the fight was still in play. Kimbo later on popped James’s ear, which hopefully next time it heals right! lol. James was very wobbly and in serious danger of further more critical damage to his ear. At this point Kimbo was clearly going to be knocked out. When he got angry and had contact with the referee, he clearly was dazed at that point. Kimbo is a fast learner/brawler just like his trainers and everyone else says. Which would result him in not making the same mistake he did when he almost took total control and knocked James out in the second round.
Now, for the record, Kimbo does need a lot more training, but in the short time he has been training he clearly has progresses ALOT from his street fighting days. If he keeps progressing at the rate he is, he clearly could easily beat James in a rematch.
yo kimbo won the fight if the guy is better than kimbo then why didnt he win the fight…the reason why is that he just didnt have the punching power to stop kimbo, kimbo might not be fit but he won…and that is what matters…you punks
If you say he clearly tapped out in the first round, I think you need to watch it again a few more times, with your eyes open. I’m not Kimbo fan, I think he could be a good fighter but he has a long way to go. Still, he clearly gave a thumbs up to the ref that he was ok because he didn’t want the fight to stop, you can see a shadow between his hand and Thompson’s arm, and Kimbo has his thumb up. You’re blind if you think otherwise.
